OTHER WORLDS
A project for South Downs Planetarium's Exhibition on possible life on other planets and what it might be like...

Lead characters: Nova and Squirt.
Above - an animated poster created using the software Adobe Animate. I initially had some technical difficulties as the poster became glitchy, but as soon as I corrected the file sizes, it was fixed.
The story I created is about a human, Nova, who crash lands onto another planet, where she is rescued by an alien, Squirt. She realises that the humans are wanting to take over Squirt's planet for their own and she leads the resistance of the indigenous population against the humans.
Character Turnarounds for Nova and Squirt

To the left: Nova's facial expressions sheet (digital) and below: Squirt's expressions sheet (traditional).
Below are examples of the creatures found on the planet. Having done some survey questions to my target audience before I began my project, I liked the idea of gravity being different on this planet which is why Squirt, a frog like creature, is a giant compared with the human, Nova. This made me think that smaller creatures such as snails could be huge, and fish might not even need water to survive in but instead float in the planet's atmosphere.

This is a flying fish that you would find in the sky. Below is my traditional watercolour version. I found that the watercolour didn't work as well as digital where I could boost the saturation of the colours.

On this planet, giant friendly snails are used for transport. I tried different colour combinations for the snail and chose the pink one. I wanted the characters to have brighter colours and also I liked the cat whiskers I gave this one, as it made it more of a cute and friendly character.

After visiting Oceanopolis Aquarium, and capturing the underwater creatures as almost cartoon characters, this gave me inspiration for some of my characters for Other Worlds.

Squirt's home - In online research, I discovered that in California, Pacific tree frogs like to live in the tube like cups of carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plants.

The Development of the character Squirt

Sketchbook designs trying various ideas for the character Squirt. Bulky like a toad, or skinny like a baby frog. I then did three final designs digitally of who Squirt could be, and then made a choice. In the end my choice was a mixture of all three of them.

Digital drawings of a frog which I did to remind me that Squirt must have the characteristics of a frog.

Below are colour studies for Squirt's wardrobe. I liked the last one the best (the brown cape, beige suit and yellow belt). It reminded me of Yoda from Star Wars. As I wanted Squirt to be wise, I thought that the viewer would associate him as such if he wore this coloured clothing.

The development of the animated poster

One of my final outcome posters for Other Worlds. After visiting the Star Wars Exhibit at the Novium Museum and seeing the Star Wars posters, I wanted this poster to say the show has a lot of 'action' and 'danger' so I gave the characters 'fighting faces' and made them have their weapons drawn. I also wanted the title to be bold but also to suggest that there are numerous worlds out there, so I gave the text an echo.
